Current Trends in the Application of Modeling and Simulation Within the Army

Marriott Ballroom, Salon E and F
Thursday, October 30, 2003, 9:00 a.m.

Sponsored by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC)

It has been a little over 10 years since Modeling and Simulation (M&S) technology started to make serious inroads within the Army.  Early on there was a robust expansion of technology investment that has by many standards dwindled over the past few years.  This isn’t actually surprising since many technologies go through phases of strong investments followed by periods of quiet as the marketplace sorts itself out.  The question at this point is: has enough time gone by that we should be coming out of this period of ‘sorting itself out’ and if so what is next?  This talk will discuss some of the trends that give a positive outlook for M&S but points out that the future investments may not be where you would expect them to be.  The challenge for both sides of the DoD/contractor fence will be to understand what is going on and what we must do to take advantage of it.

Mr. Lunceford has been involved with the Modeling and Simulation (M&S) community as a Federal Government employee for over 29 years. During this time he has been responsible for M&S programs in all phases of development/fielding including concept formulation, source selection, execution oversight, acceptance testing and installation/fielding. Mr. Lunceford’s assignments have been in program management, systems engineering and R&D development for some of the Department of Defense's largest simulation based programs. He is currently the Director, Army Model and Simulation Office (AMSO), which is responsible for shaping and guiding the Army's use of simulation technology. Previous assignments include Lead Engineer/Project Manager for the Seawolf Submarine Combat System shorebased and on-board training systems, Chief Engineer for the Army’s Combined Arms Tactical Trainer, Technical Director for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Synthetic Theater of War 97 Demonstration, DARPA Program Manager for Advanced Simulation Technology and the Technical Advisor for AMSO. He is also Editor of Simulation Technology Magazine and previous Vice Chairman of the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization. Awards include the Superior Civilian Service Medal, the Office of the Secretary of Defense Award for Excellence (two times) and the Program Executive Officer SCWS Medallion for Excellence. Mr. Lunceford is a graduate of Florida Technological University and the Defense Systems Management College (PMC 91-2), and is member of the U.S. Army Acquisition Corp.
