Summary

This paper deals with channel estimation for the uplink of UMTS TDD. The transmission medium is characterized by multi-path propagation and the goal is to estimate the channel impulse response (CIR) with the use of training sequences. Tow channel estimation methods are proposed. The Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimator is unbiased, but it is more sensitive to noise. The second channel estimation method, based on the minimization of the mean square error (MMSE), is more robust to noise although that is biased. The performances of these estimators are evaluated with the computer simulation. Some normalized channel models are used in the simulation in order to evaluate the estimators’ performances. Key words: UMTS TDD, Pilot Aided Channel Estimation, Delay Propagation.
