Spring Simulation Multiconference 2008 (SpringSim'08)

Conference Wrap-up

This year's Spring Simulation Multiconference was a GREAT success!

To show off our success...
We thought we'd provide everyone a brief summary of the event.
This is what you missed if you couldn't join us...

The festivities kicked-off Monday morning with a fantastic keynote address by Dr. Chris M. Herdman, a professor with the Department of Psychology and the Institute of Cognitive Science. His talk was entitled Simulation and Cognitive Engineering: The Use of Synthetic Environments to Design and Evaluate Human-in-the-Loop Systems. In his talk, he outlined a Cognitive Systems framework that is used to guide his research in the Advanced Cognitive Engineering (ACE) Lab and used specific examples from his research to illustrate how simulation plays a critical role in human-in-the-loop systems. It was a great way to start the conference.

The rest of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday consisted of sessions with many detailed presentations on various topics ranging from agent-based simulation to large-scale modeling of the brain to support health sciences.

We hosted ten different symposia:

bullet

Agent-Directed Simulation (ADS)

bullet

41st Annual Simulation Symposium (ANSS)

bullet

Business and Industry Symposium (BIS)

bullet

11th Communications & Networking Simulation Symposium (CNS)

bullet

DoD Architecture Framework Modeling (DODAF)

bullet

High Performance Computing & Simulation Symposium (including DEVS) (HPCS)

bullet

17th Annual International Conference on Health Sciences Simulation (ICHSS)

bullet

Military Modeling & Simulation Symposium (MMS)

bullet

Modeling & Simulation in Education (MSE)

bullet

Symposium on simulation of Systems Security (SSSS)

The Military Modeling and Simulation Symposium, chaired by Paul Roman, surprised us all by being the best attended symposium of the conference!

This year's conference also included the first-ever Poster Track at one of our Spring conferences. The Poster session was extremely well received with 24 Posters presented on-site. We are now formalizing the way we handle Poster Tracks in order to make them a permanent fixture in our Spring Simulation Multiconferences.

This conference also offered a number of exceptional tutorials:

bullet

The Network Simulator NS3 - By: George Riley, Georgia Tech

bullet

An Introduction to DEVS and Distributed DEVS - By: Ming Zhang, University of Ottawa

bullet

Debugging Parallel Applications with the TotalView Debugger - By: Chris Gottbrath, TotalView Technologies

bullet

Modeling and Simulation with the BRAHMS Agent Environment - By: Dr. Maarten Sierhuis, NASA Ames Research Center

bullet

The Deterministic Global Optimization Algorithm DIRECT - By: Layne Watson, Virginia Polytechnic and State University

There was also a special Workshop on Conceptual Modeling chaired by Louis Birta, School of Information Technology and Engineering at the University of Ottawa, that was open to all attendees. This particular workshop had a number of different presenters and presentations on various aspects of conceptual modeling.

We awarded BEST PAPER awards:

bullet ADS: Data Parallel Execution Challenges and Runtime Performance of Agent Simulations on GPUs; Kalyan Perumalla and Brandon Aaby
bullet ANSS: Cross-Layer Response Surface Methodology Applied to Wireless Mesh Network VoIP Call Capacity; Vineet Kulkarni and Michael Devetsikiotis
bullet BIS: Improving Runway Capacity: An Integrated Approach Using Modeling, Simulation and Analysis; R. Mukkamala, S. Lakkoju, V. Kamineni, S. Kamisetty, A. Polu and J. Creedon
bullet CNS:
bullet Simulation Based Performance Evaluation of ICI Mitigation Schemes for Broadband Wireless Access Networks; Xueqin Xiang, Fuqiang Liu and Yusheng Ji
bullet A Quantitative Study of Recency and Frequency Based Web Cache Replacement Strategies; Sam Romano and Hala ElAarag
bullet DODAF: Understanding Security Architecture; Suhair Amer and Drew Hamilton
bullet HPCS: Converting Macromolecular Regulatory Models from Deterministic to Stochastic Formulation; Pengyuan Wang, Ranjit Randhawa, Clifford A. Shaffer, Yang Cao and William Baumann
bullet ICHSS: Modeling and Simulating a Disease Outbreak by Learning a Contagion Parameter-based Model; B. John Oommen and Dragos Calitoiu
bullet MMS: Using Simulation to Evaluate Traffic Engineering Management Services; David Kidston and Thomas Kunz
bullet MSE: Thunder Run in the Classroom; Stephen E. Gauthier and Michael J. Kwinn, Jr.

CAE Professional Services

We encourage you to visit their web sites & check out the products & services they offer.

We also presented awards for Outstanding Service and Support to:

bullet Dr. Drew Hamilton, for his work in getting SpringSim'08 to Ottawa and his Outstanding Support of SpringSim'08 as SCS President
bullet Helen Karatza, for her Outstanding Service as Program Chair for the 41st Annual Simulation Symposium
bullet Dr. Tuncer Oren, for his Outstanding Service as General Chair for the Agent-Directed Simulation Symposium

KUDOS and THANKS

A special KUDOS to all the members of our conference committee for doing an absolutely fantastic job of pulling together all the details for this year's conference.
